Two hardcore criminals,Bhupinder Singh alias Bhinda Shadipuria and Jagroop Singh alias Roby Talwan, were killed in an encounter late on Saturday evening under the Mehatpur police station area here, the police said on Sunday. Both had at least 88 criminal cases against them in Punjab, including those of murder, attempt to murder, contract killing, dacoity and highway robberies. A magisterial inquiry has been, however, ordered into the encounter as per the norms of the National Human Rights Commission.
While Bhinda was arrested in 37 cases out of the total 68 cases registered against him and he managed to get bail every time,Ruby, who had 20 cases against him,had escaped from police custody in 2009.
Director General of Police P S Gill told the media here that the police had already requested the Jalandhar deputy commissioner for a magisterial probe into the encounter. A Special Investigating Team will investigate the cases against them (the accused) and also look into the encounter, he said. Gill said both accused were also active in Rajasthan,Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and the state police were getting details of the cases against them from these states.
The DGP said the accused were travelling in a car with a red beacon and were signalled to stopped by a police party on Saturday evening, but they tried to speed away and started firing on the police. In the retaliatory fire, the two were killed,he added. Gill said the police had prior information that the two were coming from Jagraon.
SSP Ashish Chaudhary said one bullet hit in the turban of CIA in-charge Inderjit Singh, who was leading the police team, and he had a narrow escape. The police said the two accused were wanted in the murder of NRI Mohinderjit Singh who was killed on the night of September 6 on his way to Amritsar airport.
