Chandigarh, September 19: The city experienced its wettest 12 hours of the season as rains that started on Thursday evening lashed the region till Friday morning.

“These weather conditions are likely to continue till the end of the month. The rainfall was above normal till the morning hours today and we are recording the afternoon and evening data to make a comparison,” said a Met official.

With the department recording 20 mm rains from 8.30 pm on Thursday to 8.30 am on Friday, the temperature saw a dip of 6 degrees. The mercury plummeted to 23 degrees as compared to 29 on Thursday.

As a result of the incessant rains, the bridge at Bapu Dham collapsed in the evening, though no one was hurt in the incident.

Water entered some portions of the emergency area in PGI. Patients and their attendants at GMSH-16, bore the brunt as the registration counter and the emergency block remained under water.

“It rained very heavily and water entered some parts of the building. We are in the process of renovating the old building which will solve the problem of waterlogging,” said a PGI spokesperson.

“Luckily, none of the students was sitting under that portion of the roof which collapsed,” said a teacher.

Karamjit, a parent, told Newsline, “The authorities should look into the matter and take corrective measures as soon as possible.”

Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar, meanwhile, said, “We will get the building inspected and take the required corrective measures.”
