The special court hearing the case of serial blasts in November 2007 issued showcause notices to the Deputy Inspector General of Police and the Special Superintendent of Police of Lucknow, asking them to explain why the prosecuting agency was not cooperating with the court.
The court noted that despite summons, prosecution witness Chiranjeev Nath Sinha, a police officer posted in Lucknow, had not appeared before the court for the fourth time. Taking a serious view of Sinha's disobedience, the court of Additional District Judge Laxmi Kant Shukla observed that only because of Sinha's continued absence, the trial of the accused, who are in jail, is lingering.
Prosecution counsel Aasha Ram Chaudhry said the court, in its showcause notice, has asked senior police officers why it should not take legal action against Sinha. Following a request from the accused, the court also ordered the jail administration to ensure availability of water and Urdu newspapers and arrange "Iftar" for them. A series of near-simultaneous blasts had ripped through court complexes in Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi on November 23, 2007.
