The court of additional sessions judge VP Sirohi on Saturday held a 20-year-old taxi driver, Parminder Singh, guilty on charges of kidnap and murder of a minor, Mandeep Kaur.
The quantum of sentence against the man, Parminder Singh, for the kidnapping and murder, will be pronounced tomorrow, on February 4.
The case dates back to August 11, 2011 when the Chandigarh police arrested him from Mohali for kidnapping and murdering Kaur, a resident of Badheri. Parminder Singh alias Babloo, a resident of Ghataur Mohali, had pushed the 17-year-old girl in Ropar canal during the intervening night of August 10-11, 2011.
Parminder Singh and the minor girl had developed a relationship and on August 9, he came to Chandigarh and the duo left the city. The girl wanted to marry him, but Parminder did not like the idea of marriage. The two went to Ropar canal where the accused pushed her and returned home without telling anyone about the incident.
The mother of the minor had lodged a complaint of kidnapping on August 10, suspecting that Parminder Singh had abducted her daughter, a student of class IX of Government Model High School, Sector 41.
A case of kidnapping was registered. Parminder Singh was arrested the next day. During questioning, he revealed that he had pushed the girl into the Ropar canal.
The body of Kaur was not recovered by the police and later, on August 13, 2011, the Tohana police station in Fatehabad District said that they had recovered a body which they had cremated, stating as unclaimed.
The mother of the deceased identified the picture of the girl taken before her cremation.
