A 21-year-old national-level wrestler from Punjab was shot at, allegedly by police personnel, near the Northern Sports Authority of India Centre in Sonepat, Haryana, around 8 pm on Wednesday.
Gurpal Singh had been called up for a senior national wrestling camp that begun on November 23,
He sustained a bullet injury on his back and is recuperating at Jaipur Golden Hospital in Delhi. Two of his friends, Manav and Surajbir, who were with him in a car when the incident took place, escaped unhurt.
Police denied the involvement of their personnel in the case. Rakam Singh, DSP (Headquarters), Sonepat, said, "We have registered a case of attempt to murder against unknown persons and are investigating the case. We have not identified the accused."
Speaking to Newsline, Gurpal Singh said he was returning to the training camp in Balgarh when he saw a black Swift Dzire following his car. The driver of the Dzire asked Singh to stop his car. Assuming that he needed help with directions, Singh slowed his car. The Dzire stopped ahead of his car, blocking the way. "There were four men and a woman in the car. A man approached my car and pointed a gun at me. He asked me to step out of a car, show him my identity card and said he is a policeman."
Singh alleged that the man did not let him speak and opened fire. "I locked the doors of the car and rolled up the windows. Me and my friends ducked and the bullet hit the dashboard," he said.
Within seconds, two more men also stepped out of the Dzire and tried to open the doors of Singh's car. "These two were also armed. They shot at us when they saw that I had locked the doors. I had no clue about what was happening. I managed to escape by taking a sharp left turn and driving through the bushes. I wanted to ask them that if they were from the police, then why were they after my life? I am not a criminal," he said.
