Additional taxis may soon be plying on the city roads. There is a proposal to add 25 new taxis to the existing fleet. At present there are two operators who are plying taxis in the city.
Secretary, State Transport Authority, Balbir Singh said that 25 taxis will be added in the coming days. This will provide additional facilities to the residents, he said. While 50 taxis can be added by the operator, it was felt that until there is adequate parking space available for these taxis, the numbers will be restricted.
At present, more than 100 air-conditioned taxis are plying in the city. While one of the operators had plans of adding new taxis to its fleet, the plan has been on hold for the past one year. The operators are ruing the increasing prices of diesel. A proposal was mooted for increasing the fare, but it has not been given the final nod.
One of the operators said, "The price of diesel has increased, but the Administration has put the proposal of increase in fare in deep freeze. Some decision should be taken at the earliest. In fact our plans to increase the number of taxis is also on hold as the number of taxis that are required in the city are already there. Additional taxis are not required."
