A 25-year-old man, Manish, was arrested on Wednesday for killing a man last week in South Delhi's Sangam Vihar area. Police said Manish alias Nata and his aide Sunny had murdered Gyan Singh on Friday night. Singh had allegedly demanded extortion money from Manish and assaulted him when he refused to pay.
"Manish and Sunny had some personal enmity with Singh. On Friday night, Sunny fired three shots at Singh. He and Manish then fled on a motorcycle. Manish was riding the two-wheeler," DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma said.
"Singh sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to Batra Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival."
During investigation, police tried to locate Manish after eyewitnesses said he was involved in the crime.
Manish had not returned home since the night of the murder.
"We had increased patrolling in the area due to Diwali. Manish was spotted at the T-point of IGNOU-MB Road, and we arrested him a little while later," Sharma said.
During questioning, Manish reportedly told police that Singh had assaulted him and Sunny a few days before the murder. "Singh had told the two accused to pay Rs 25,000 if they wanted to work in Sangam Vihar. He had threatened them with dire consequences if they refused to pay. However, both Manish and Sunny refused and were assaulted," Sharma said.
Manish and Sunny saw Singh sitting outside a shop. They procured a country-made pistol and shot dead Singh before escaping, police said. Manish then went to Muradabad but returned to Delhi after he ran out of money.
"He is a school dropout and works as a property dealer in Sangam Vihar. He is married and has a child. Efforts are on to arrest Sunny," Sharma said.
