A year after the terrorist attack that cost him his job, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has said government officials too should be held accountable for their lapses, if any.

“Politicians in power don’t go to the borders (to fight the enemy), but public outrage is always directed against them and so we resigned owning moral responsibility,” Deshmukh, now Union Minister for Heavy Industries, told The Indian Express over the phone from Delhi, adding that politicians could not be held personally responsible for lapses.

“Now that R R Patil is back as (Maharashtra) Home Minister, (it) proves that he was not personally responsible. I am happy that he is back,” Deshmukh said.

Asked about the possibility of action against bureaucrats, he said, “It is true that accountability is also applicable to the bureaucracy. The Ram Pradhan Committee has submitted its report. Let us see.”

Deshmukh and his deputy Patil were forced to step down after the attacks. Patil triggered outrage for appearing to play down the incident as a small one of the type that is common in a large city like Mumbai, and Deshmukh drew flak for taking his actor son Riteish and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma on what was seen as a guided tour of terror locations.

Deshmukh was upset at being removed, and is known to have complained privately that while politicians were made scapegoats, officials had got away lightly. A year on, after having entered the Rajya Sabha and become a Central minister, he has for the first time gone public with these views.

    ... contd.

26/11 By: Varind | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Of course politicians don't go to border to fight the enemy but atleast politicians should behave according to the situation and think before speaking. Mr. R.R.Patil did not resign voluntarily but public anger made him to resign for his rubbish remarks. Nevertheless he is back at the saddle just to rub salt on public wounds, proving once again that politicans can do anything and get rewarded. Mr.Deshmukh is talking about inquiry about official lapses for 26/11. Would he let the nation know the names of suppliers and buyers of inferior Bullet Proof Jackets and where is Mr. Karkare's jacked which was pierced by bullets? Actions speak louder than the sermons. Jawans and innocent people are meant to die and politicians are meant to enjoy power, and visit Taj Hotel in the company of film directors so that their personal interests can be protected for years to come. Jai Ho.
Mr. Deshmukh's Ice CreamBy: Anirud | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Idiocy comes in many flavors, and the Deshmukh flavor is like the Baskin Robbins neapolitan, three flavors in one: idiocy, irresponsibility and immaturity.
MrBy: jagadeesan | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr Deshmukh"s outburst is to be understood in the light of the fact although the then chief and his deputy were forced to resign only the deputy is resurrected to enjoy the benefits (deputy chief minister) once againand he is not allowed that benefit.Who can chew the loss of coveted CM post to an ordinary central ministry

Vilasrao's aborted third inningsBy: ashok | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Vilasrao Deshmukh used all his considerable resources, accumulated over two long spells as CM, to lobby for a third innings. Luckily for the long suffering people of Maharashtra, the crown prince does not like him.
Vilasrao DeshmukhBy: Varind | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward If Crown Prince does not like him, how is he in Central Cabinet? Remember, Birds of feather flock together.
