Conversion from 2D to 3D is a growing trend in the film industry. Indian has an advantage over other countries like China with most of the people who are part of the animated segment are English speaking. These views were expressed by Virender Dass,Technical Director from Z-Effects who was in the city on Friday.

The conversion market, though at its infancy stage in India, has a future in the country. Dass, who was present in the city at an animation and visual affects training institute Frameboxx, said that,“The 2D to 3D conversion requires a lot of technical skill,it not only involves one camera, but involves inclination of two cameras with many stages involved.”

Though the whole concept is on technical terms, simply put, conversion market recreates an image into a real image,he added. The International market has gained a lot of faith in the Indian animators.

“Most students are working for the Hollywood projects. As many as 60 per cent of the animation work in Hollywood movies, which involves not only graphics, but also VFX (visual effects),animation being part of it,is done in India,” Dass explained. Narnia returns,Harry Potter,Click,Spiderman 3 and Priest are among such movies.

India has become a key receptor for the International market with the increasing confidence of international community. “India stands at an advantage with competitive countries like China,as most of the people who are in the animation segment are the English speaking population. Of course, demand is there due to cheap labour, which the international market is also focusing on,” said Sanjay Kumar, one of the animators.

Though,Bollywood has played a part in promoting animation in the country,it is still at the beginning stage.

Dass believes that in two-three years time, the country will catch up the notion of conversion market too. “Efforts in the past in the animation direction has either been without vision or without conviction, the retarding factor being the capital,or rather investors,” he added.
