Following the state government making a provision of Rs 50 crore in its budget for the equestrian statue of Shivaji off Marine Drive, the state technical committee has shortlisted three architects from among the 11 firms competing for the project.

The technical committee is headed by CM Ashok Chavan, and the bids were submitted in December 2008. The shortlisted firms include Team One Architects, R G Patki Architects Pvt Ltd and Nitin Parulekar Architects Pvt Ltd. One of these will go on to bag the Rs 200-crore project to install a 309-ft high statue of the Maratha king a km into the sea.

The statue will be built on an artificially-created six-acre island, which will also house an amphitheatre, an exhibition gallery, museums, garden, food court and a library mostly centered around the life of the warrior king.

Describing his proposed design, Parish Kapse from Team One Architects said, “From the base of the island to the statue, everything is based on authentic traditional design in contemporary surrounding, comprising jetties, helipad and a state-of -the-art auditorium with proper acoustics. ”

Architect Nitin Parulekar said the design submitted by his firm stresses on the strength and valour of Shivaji and the expanse of his kingdom. “The peripherals have to gel with the image of the person who was known to be a strong leader and warrior. It’s a symmetrical design that celebrates space and provides for a dramatic aerial view.”

Akhil Bharatiya Maratha Mahasangh, a Marathi organisation, had written to the CM recently, opposing any move to include “Brahmanical” figures as part of the memorial.

o i cBy: ritz | 07-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward It is suprising that people are so ignorant of the things around them .. especially politics and reality. FI one feels or rather says that the money can be better used for someother purpose why dont we object on building of malls, grand houses of the likes of Ambanis and so many other things in country that happen unnecessarily. Why a project like this which is going to make Mumbai feel proud of a monument like no where else be targeted. We are proud to see Kanyakumari having a statue of its own then why not mumbai . Afterall there has to be some freedom given to locals... U build a bridge and name it after Rajiv Gandhi... why???? is there a shortage of leaders in Maharashtra.....?

statue of our great leadersBy: richard | 12-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Soon we will have one more statue to worship. However this statue will be incomplete unless we sculpture those who turned this city from Bombay to Mumbai. Prominent among them are the members of Thackeray family. It is this family's unending devotion to change the face of this city that made the people to understand power politics. So much so decisions to administer the state are made on the strength of the stones the members of their political parties can throw. Marathi has been introduced at all levels of education and administration on account of their efforts. Today, most of the state employees have their pictures in their homes and they even worship them. As such it is a fitting tribute if the state government install the statues of the Thackeray family along with the statue of great Shivaji Maharaj.
PrioritiesBy: sv | 12-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Rs 200-crore deserve to be first invested in infrastructure, public amenities, housing the poor and then erecting monuments...I am sure even Shivaji maharaj would had been of the same opinion!
