After the Pune girls showed their dominance in Indian rugby, the men showed that they are not far behind with three city lads making the cut for the India camp that will take place at the Shiv Chhatrapati sports city on Sunday. The three are Siddharth Lolayekar,Gaganjeet Singh Anand and Indrajeet Mahajan.

Lolayekar,a first year B Com student in the Marathwada Mitramandal College of Commerce, started playing rugby only a year back. He has a general keenness towards sports but it is the fitness aspect, the hardness of the game and the tough tackling that attracted him towards rugby. He is delighted to have made the cut. “It is an amazing feeling to have your hard work pay off”,he said.

Mahajan is most experienced of the three having spent three years playing the sport. He was delighted to hear the unexpected news of his selection. “I was on cloud nine”,he said. “This has been the most inspiring moment of my career, since my first match played three years ago against Kiss of Kalinga”,he added. Although he is currently studying to be an engineer at the Vishwakrma Institute of Technology, the 19-year-old’s current focus will be on the camp. For Gaganjeet,a first year B Com student at Symbiosis, his India call up was a dream come true. He started playing rugby when he was 16 and while most parents dissuade their children from taking up the ‘rough’ sport,it was Gaganjeet’s father who actually pushed him to play. “Surhud Khare (president of the RFS Pune) was good friends with my dad and would talk to him a lot about rugby. Once when I showed interest in getting into boxing,my father suggested rugby to be a far less dangerous sport. I started and never stopped”,he said. Rugby, which has now become a part of his life,is something that he will never part ways with because of the physical strength, the hardness and the stamina he gets out of the game. Khare feels that their accomplishment is throughly deserved by each one of them. “All three players have toiled hard on the University grounds every morning and all of them deserve the opportunity they are getting. They should now make the most of it”,he said.
