Three gunrunners, allegedly attempting to smuggle more than a dozen sophisticated firearms were arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. The names of the accused have been withheld in the interest of further investigations.
"The accused were arrested from the Anand Vihar-Ghazipur foot overbridge around 5 pm on Saturday," DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said.
Police said a Swift Dzire was spotted going towards Anand Vihar and, upon confirmation from the informer, was cornered and its occupants directed to step out.
Police failed in their attempt to wind down the windowpanes of the car. When the inner beading and the padding of the rear door of the car were removed, 15 high-quality pistols and 30 empty magazines were found.
During questioning, the main accused revealed that he is the younger brother of a criminal from Meerut, who was killed in a police encounter over a decade ago. The accused was later found to be involved in three cases, one each of circulating fake currency, Arms Act and Gangster Act over the last 11 years, police said.
Police said the three accused met in jail in 2009. After being released, the main accused was introduced to the third gang member, who supplies illegal weapons in Bihar's Munger district. Later, he became the main accused's contact and began transporting consignments of high-quality firearms from Munger to Western UP and Delhi regularly.
The Special Cell, over the past several months, has been working to check smuggling of Munger-made illegal weapons in NCR. Police sources said the weapons were to be sold to criminals in NCR.
In the past year, a total of 54 high quality weapons were seized, curbing proliferation of weapons used by criminals for committing heinous crimes, police said.
