A large police contingent has been deployed at the Annamalai University in Chidambaram following tension over the death of four students, including three who drowned while fleeing from the police, over the past 48 hours. The institution has been closed down indefinitely following the incident.
According to sources,Gautam Kumar from Bihar,a second-year student of electronics and communication engineering, was run over by a truck after his bike hit a roadside pole near the campus. After first aid at the University Medical College hospital, the student was sent to JIPMER in Pondicherry, but he succumbed to injuries soon after.
Protesting against the lack of proper medical support,a group of north Indian students went on a rampage inside the university campus on Sunday night, said the sources. The police were called in.
When they started targeting the hospital, the officials chased away the protestors. The students ran and some fell into a canal near the campus, said SP Ashwin M Kotnis. A security guard who ran after the students found the body of Sumit Kumar,a second-year computer science student from Jharkhand,in the canal. It was then learnt that two more students Mohammed Sarfraz Rab,22,from Patna and Ashish Ranjan Kumar,22,from Ranchi were also missing. After a continuous search their bodies too were recovered from the canal.
Sarfraz was a second-year student of mechanical engineering while Ashish was his batchmate, doing electrical and electronics engineering. A probe has been ordered.
