Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today inaugurated a new station building at the Delhi Cantonment Railway Station, apart from flagging off three new train services.
The new trains include a high-speed parcel train from Tuglaqabad to Vapi in Gujarat, a tri¿weekly extension of the Bandra Terminus to Jaipur Express up to Delhi Sarai Rohilla and a tri-weekly service from Delhi Sarai Rohilla to Sadulpur.
The trains are expected to “lessen passenger rush at New Delhi railway station”.
The parcel train was named ‘Pragati Express’ at the behest of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the chief guest for the occasion. “This is the beginning of development as other such trains will start soon,” she added.
Mamata Banerjee said, “The Cantonment station is an one in Delhi area as all trains going to the western parts of the country: Rajasthan, Gujarat etc, pass through or halt at the station.” The total cost of work sanctioned is Rs 5.13 crore, according to the Railway spokesperson.
Banerjee said the Railways will also start other parcel trains from Tuglaqabad to Chennai and Howrah under the Tej Shree Parcel Sewa. Other services like Delhi¿Kanpur Shatabdi, Delhi¿Ghaziabad will be started soon, she added.
Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath, Minister of State for Railways E Ahmed, and Member of Legislative Assembly Karan Singh Tanwar were present.
