30 bikers held for New Year eve rash driving

In a drive against speeding bikers that the police claim are a menace every New Year's eve, 30 persons were arrested for rash driving on the Marine Drive in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to police sources, the bikers were seen speeding towards the Gateway Of India by policemen deployed on the Marine Drive around midnight. The police set up nakabandis at various spots on the stretch. "We had general descriptions like the model and colour of the bikes that were seen speeding and we waited for them. As they approached, our officers tried to stop them. However, some of them attempted to evade the nakabandi and crashed into the barricade in the process," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I, Ravindra Shisve.

The bikers were caught before they could escape. At a nakabandi set up near Bombay Police Gymkhana, some bikers ended up hitting two constables.

Ten bikers were arrested by the Marine Drive police alone. "All the 10 bikers were taken for medical test and then to the police station. They were charged with rash and negligent driving under the Motor Vehicles Act and were granted bail," said senior Inspector Zunjarrao Gharal of the Marine Drive police station. The bikers are residents of Bandra, Antop Hill and Mahim, and in the age group of 20 to 35 years, he added.

Shisve said that speeding bikers are a menace on the Marine Drive, especially on weekends and during festivals. The police are compelled to set up barricades and personnel risk their lives trying to stop bikers manually, often ending up with injuries.
