300 ‘crorepatis’ in new Lok Sabha

543 MPs elected to the new Lok Sabha together have assets worth more than Rs 3,000 crore,while 300 of them can be called 'crorepatis'.

Andhra Pradesh may not account for even 10 per cent of total Lok Sabha seats,but the 42 MPs from the state have together emerged as the richest bloc in the lower house of Parliament with a wealth of over Rs 600 crore.

However,in terms of average wealth,Haryana is on the top with the 10 MPs from the state owning assets worth an average over Rs 18 crore.

Nearly 15 per cent of the people in both Andhra Pradesh and Haryana are estimated to be living in abject poverty.

In terms of combined assets of Lok Sabha representatives,AP is on the top with assets worth Rs 606 crore,followed by Maharashtra (close to Rs 500 crore),Tamil Nadu (about Rs 450 crore),Uttar Pradesh (about Rs 400 crore) and Haryana (Rs 181 crore) in the top five.

Karnataka and Punjab are the only two other states where MPs’ combined assets top Rs 100 crore – about Rs 160 crore in the southern state and Rs 150 crore in the agriculture- dominated northern state.

Besides,the total asset size of MPs exceed Rs 10 crore in 15 other states – including Rajasthan,MP,Bihar,Orissa,Delhi,Gujarat,Assam,West Bengal,Kerala,Himachal Pradesh,Meghalaya,Jharkhand,Uttarakhand,J&K and Arunachal Pradesh.

Only MPs from five states or union territories – Tripura,Mizoram,Nagaland,Manipur and Andaman & Nicobar Islands – have assets worth less than Rs one crore.

The 543 MPs elected to the new Lok Sabha together have assets worth more than Rs 3,000 crore,while 300 of them can be called ‘crorepatis’ as they own assets worth at least Rs one crore. The average asset size of an MP in the entire Lok Sabha works out to be more than Rs five crore.

In terms of average assets,MPs from Haryana are richest with assets worth about Rs 18 crore. Haryana is followed by AP (about Rs 15 crore),Meghalaya (Rs 13 crore),Tamil Nadu (Rs 12 crore) and Punjab (Rs 11.5 crore) on this metric.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands,which sends just one MP to Lok Sabha,is ranked lowest both in terms of average and total asset size at just over Rs 12 lakh.

On the basis of average asset size,the archipelago is followed by Manipur,Tripura,Nagaland,Mizoram among the five poorest states or union territories. The average asset size of MPs from these five states,as also in Chattisgarh and West Bengal,is below Rs one crore.

At the same time,six states – Haryana,AP,Meghalaya,Tamil Nadu,Punjab and Maharashtra – boast of MPs with an average asset size of more than Rs 10 crore for the winners of the polls for 15th Lok Sabha.

Besides,22 other states or union territories have an average wealth of at least Rs one crore. These include Delhi,UP,Chandigarh,Assam,Rajasthan,Orissa,MP,J&K,Goa,Jharkhand,Bihar and Kerala.
