  • Acting on information gathered by army's intelligence wing, Sri Lankan security forces detained around 300 senior LTTE cadres from various welfare camps during the past one month, military officials have said.

The Tiger rebels were found hiding among the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the camps in the north, following revelation about their presence by their detained colleagues, they said.

These LTTE cadres were taken into custody from some welfare villages, including 'Menik Farm' in Vavuniya, as they were moving around with ordinary Tamil refugees, who had escaped from former LTTE-controlled areas during the battle.

Meanwhile, measures are being taken to rehabilitate over 10,000 ex-LTTE cadres in the north by the government, according to Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Maj Gen Daya Ratnayake.

Ratnayake, who is tasked with preparing a detailed programme for the ex-cadres, told the state-run 'Sunday Observer' that the classification of these persons had been completed.

"The process to classify the ex-cadres into different groups considering their age, gender and involvement in the outfit has already been completed and the ground work to move them into new rehabilitation centres is nearing completion," he was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
