The President, the Vice President and Governors will get a 300 per cent pay hike with government on Thursday clearing a proposal to enhance their emoluments.

The President's emoluments have been raised to Rs 1.50 lakh per month from Rs 50,000 at present.

Similarly, the Vice President will get Rs 1.25 lakh -- a more than three-time hike from the present salary of Rs 40,000.

The salary of governors will also go up from Rs 36,000 to Rs 1.10 lakh.

The new emoluments were approved at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Sources said the hike will be effective from January 2007.

The CCEA also rationalised post-retirement benefits to former Presidents, former Vice Presidents and their spouses, an official spokesperson said.

The hike comes close on the heels of government announcing a bonanza for its employees by implementing the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission report under which a secretary at the Centre will draw Rs 80,000 a month.

Indian AmbassadorBy: sathisha | 15-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward What is role of Indian Ambassador in the foreign/middle east country? Indian President or Indian Prime minister or their cabinet minister should look in to the matter that Ambassador is the most powerful post to deal and solve all matters to the indians whenever they required some help or concession to be given. I have seen most of the time the charges are made for any thing it is too higher than our India. Also my opinion is that Ambassador should be available at the Embassy all the times. But unfortunately they are always attending for a function or opening ceremony. When we go to the Embassy some of the staff or not cooperating well it hurts to our heart.
New ruleBy: Baatul | 12-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward The government should pass a rule that no one's salary can be greater the Hon'ble President of India. That would stop the Ambanis and Tatas to stop looting.

The new royal class.By: K.P. | 12-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Lets have the reaction of the Indian Express editors.I totally agree with the views expressed that the next hike will be for the PM,Ministers,MP's,MLA's etc as they do not need a Pay Commission to decide their Pay and ithe decisions of Pay hikr is always unanimous. The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces should look into the grievances ot the middle level officers of Armed Forces which form 25% of the officer cadre.God help the Aam aadmi. The Privy purses of the Royal class was withdrawn but now we have have a new class of Royalty who have the money, privileges, security cover not only for themselves but their wards amd may be also for the children of their wards and no work.Mera Bharat Mahan.
