As many as 32 persons suffered acid burns at a marriage ceremony in the Pahasu area of Bulandshahr on Monday, after the groom’s cousin ‘mistakenly’ assumed acid to be water and sprinkled it on the bride’s relatives. The accused, identified as one Kailash, has been arrested.

Even as most of the injured were admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC),five critically injured women were taken to a private hospital in Bulandshahr.

Bulandshahr SSP Neelesh Kumar said Veerpal of Alipur village had arranged the marriages of his two daughters,Guddi and Radha,on Sunday and the baraats had arrived from Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. On Monday morning, when a ritual was being solemnised,Kailash sprinkled acid on the gathering from two plastic containers kept on the terrace.

SP (Rural) Babooram said the five women sustained over 35 per cent burns. Veerpal’s daughters were married off today, added Babooram.
