A 33-year-old man from Kharadi who developed fever with chills on January 6 died due to dengue haemorrhagic fever on January 17. Blood samples sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) confirmed dengue. Dr S T Pardeshi, acting chief medical officer of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said that the number of cases had waned since November. "We are getting a few stray cases and people should remain on a constant alert if they have symptoms of high fever coupled with body ache and chills," he said. The patient was initially treated at Chandannagar's Agarwal general hospital and was later shifted to Nobel hospital on January 10. He died on January 17 of multi-organ failure due to dengue haemorrhagic fever. NIV scientists said that despite the cold weather conditions, dengue deaths are rising. The aedes aegypti mosquito does not survive in extreme cold weather.
