An obesity mega-camp and seminar, with screening of body mass index (BMI) was organised by DMCH doctors on Saturday. During the seminar, Bariatric surgeon Dr Ashish Ahuja and Dr PS Nain informed that more than 60 per cent of youth suffering from obesity are also suffering from from diabetes mellitus type 2 along with high blood pressure and various heart diseases.
Around 100 patients were screened in the camp by Dr Amit Berry, assistant professor of medicine at DMCH while senior dietician Shweta Batta gave a talk on managing weight loss.
Ahuja said that according 2012 statistics by the World Health Organisation (WHO) about one in six persons in the world is considered obese and one in ten is diabetic while one in three suffer from high blood pressure. "Based on 2007 national health family survey data, as many as 30.3 per cent of males and 37.5 per cent females are obese in Punjab," he added.
