350 canines from across country flock to city for Leisure Valley dog show

An all-breed dog show was organised by the Chandigarh Kennel Club at Leisure Valley, Sector 10 on Sunday. Around 350 dogs of 40 breeds were present from across the country.

SSP Naunihal Singh was the chief guest at the event. The maximum entries were for rottweilers and labradors. The dogs were judged according to their groups. On the basis of ear placement, tail, coat, height from shoulders, alertness and finally the movement of the dogs, they were judged.

One of the exotic breeds was an Akita owned by Kulbeer Singh. The dogs were adjudged first among their respective breeds. There were foreign handlers who had come to the city to take part in the competition.

G S Sandhu, owner of a pomeranian, a toy breed, said, "In a day, a pomeranian requires a diet of 100 grams and I feed him three times a day to give him a balanced diet. My dog is 8 months old. His ancestors were from the USA."

He further said that this breed is very active and friendly and that it is a very affectionate breed and generally does not fall ill. He said that those who have a problem of blood pressure should breed such pets. Along with the pomeranian, Sandhu also owned a golden retriever, a Siberian husky, a labrador and had a total of 11 dogs.

Inderpal Singh, from Amritsar said that he had five Himalayan Sheep Dogs. These dogs are basically found in the Himalayas and are bred to protect their owners from wolves and leopards found there. He said that his dog, four and a half years old and 36 inch in height, requires a daily feed of half a kilo of chicken, half a kilogram of feed, curd, rice and milk products. These dogs are friendly by nature towards family members but are very aggressive towards strangers.
