The monsoon may be some time away but waterborne diseases like cholera have already registered a rise in numbers in Delhi.
According to the latest daily disease surveillance report, dated May 18,released by the MCD Health department,37 cholera-related cases and deaths were reported from the city in the first fifteen days of May.
MCD authorities may not be pressing the panic button but this number is the highest recorded so far this year; 27 cases were reported in April.
There is no need to panic. People need to drink clean water and take necessary precautions, Dr N K Yadav,MCD health officer, said.
These figures gain significance when compared to figures for May last year, when the total number of cholera related cases reported from the city stood at 35. The report also indicates these numbers are going to rise with the onset of monsoon.
The trend this year,in fact, has been quite different from last year. In the first three months of 2008,no cholera related case was reported. But this year,18 cases were reported during the initial three months.
Cholera is a water-borne disease and is caused by the bacterium Vibrio Cholerae.
