3-member panel to meet, on agenda is Tricity development

Punjab, Haryana keen on discussing UT Master Plan.

A three-member Committee on Inter-State Regional Plan for Chandigarh will hold its first meeting in New Delhi on February 25 and discuss the plan to develop Tricity on the lines of the NCR region.

To be convened by the Union Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), the meeting will discuss in detail the proposed Metro Rail which will run through Tricity besides the Draft Master Plan 2031of the city.

Sources say that Haryana had specifically requested the MoUD that the draft Master Plan of the Union Territory of Chandigarh be discussed at the meeting.

In a letter sent to the UT Administration, the MoUD had informed the UT officials that the neighbouring governments of Punjab and Haryana were keen on discussing the UT Master Plan at the meeting. The coordination committee which was formed recently comprises the secretaries of Punjab and Haryana and the Advisor to the UT Administrator.

The meeting, which will be held under the chairmanship of the MoUD Secretary, is also likely to witness deliberations on the terms of reference drafted by the MoUD for the committee.

Recently, the UT Administration had forwarded a copy of the draft UT Master Plan to the Town and Country Planning Organisation (TCPO), a technical arm of the Union Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), which had in turn sent an appreciation letter to the UT Administration officials.

Officials in the UT Administration say copies of the draft UT Master Plan were yet to be made available to the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. Since the draft also mentions the developmental plans in the city's periphery which touches the boundaries of Punjab and Haryana, these two states were pressing for a discussion on the Master Plan.

Other issues to be taken up at the meeting include road connectivity in Tricity, land requirement for housing projects of UT, and declaring eco-sensitive zone around Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary
