The Food and Drug Administration department has registered an offence against the owner of a Pune-based pharmaceutical shop and three medical representatives for their alleged involvement in illegal sale of abortion pills.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) department has registered an offence against the owner of a Pune-based pharmaceutical shop and three medical representatives for their alleged involvement in illegal sale of abortion pills.

The offence was registered by FDA inspector Dilip Kashinath Jagtap at the Vishrambag police station. Arun Fattechand Chordia, the owner of Amol Distributors at Sadashiv Peth, and Sunil Dahibhate,Pukhraj and Amol Sonawane — all three MRs of a reputed company — have been booked under Sections 420,467,468,471,34 of the Indian Penal Code for cheating and forgery as well as under Sections of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act,1940.

Jagtap said these people were booked in the drive against female foeticide launched by FDA. “During inspection,we found that fake sales receipts for tablets like Misoprost had been prepared by Amol Distributors in the names of doctors. We learnt that Amol Distributors gave these abortion pills to medical representatives, who do not possess licences to sell them. We lodged a police complaint against the owner of Amol Distributors and the medical representatives on Sunday,” said Jagtap.

“This is the second such case during the drive in which a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the distributor. A similar police case was registered against a drug wholesaler in Pimpri on June 13,” said assistant commissioner Prakash Pore of FDA.

Joint commissioner of FDA B R Masal and assistant commissioner Arjun Khadtare also took part in the drive. The FDA started inspection of sale records of abortion drugs all over the state on June 6 after cases of female foeticide cases emerged in Beed. Five police complaints were lodged against chemists in Beed. Now,two have been registered in the Pune city police’s jurisdiction.
