4 months on, chargesheet filed in Shivali suicide case

Nearly four months after 19-year-old Shivali committed suicide, allegedly after being harassed by police and photo-journalists, police have filed a chargesheet in the case and have named traffic inspector Balwinder Kaur, who is under suspension, a photo journalist and a cameraman of a local channel. The chargesheet has been filed under section 306 of the IPC (abetment to suicide).

It was presented in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC) Pushpinder Singh on January 5, based on the inquiry report of IG Jalandhar zone Gurpreet Deo.

Shivali, a student of Prem Chand Markanda SD College, committed suicide in the afternoon of August 31 after she was photographed by photo-journalists while she was allegedly being harassed inspector Balwinder Kaur. The chargesheet says that inspector Balwinder Kaur, who was on a special drive against eve teasing, had questioned Shivali for travelling with her male friend, Gaurav Sharma. Their car had hit another.

The girl reportedly threatened to commit suicide if her photographs are published but the photo-journalists allegedly kept clicking her pictures. Police have made Gaurav the prime witness in the case and have named over a dozen other witnesses.
