Heavy rains on Friday led to massive waterlogging and consequent traffic jams in most areas in the Capital. The control room of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi registered over 40 complaints of waterlogging from various areas.
Areas that faced major waterlogging include Tilak Bridge,Moolchand underpass,Andrews Ganj flyover,Lajpat Nagar,Kotla Road,South Extension,Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and Nelson Mandela Marg. Officials said they also received complaints of 55 trees being uprooted.
The corporation, however, maintained that the waterlogging this time was not a result of problems with the drain desilting work carried out by the agency. It is natural that so much water would take some time to clear. We recorded almost 75 mm of rainfall. Hence,it took time for the water to pass through, MCD commissioner K S Mehra said. Also, because the rains were accompanied by strong winds that caused many trees to uproot, the bellmouths of a few drains were clogged by leaves or branches. Water has been cleared from all areas now, he added.
NDMC,meanwhile, said they received no major of waterlogging complaints . We received some complaints of trees being uprooted. It was cleared by our men within a short span of time, an official said.
