6,000 seats vacant in PTU colleges

Jalamdhar, October 2 : Punjab Technical University (PTU) has failed to fill nearly 6,000 seats of engineering courses. Sources said PTU would face a loss of over Rs 150 crore due to these vacancies. It had conducted counselling for Punjab CET-2008 exam for 18,000 seats. The main reason for the seats remaining vacant is prolonged counselling, poor infrastructure in various colleges and under-qualified staff.

There are about 30 colleges under PTU and over 100 seats in each are vacant. Owners of various institutes said PTU should conduct online counselling from next year, as prolonged sessions force the students to join colleges in other states. They said they would meet PTU authorities soon to assess the losses. PTU Dean (Academics) Dr V K Arora said now the vacant seats would be filled by the colleges on their own, on merit.
