6 Indian UN peacekeepers hurt in Congo

Six Indian peacekeepers and their local interpreter serving in strife-torn Congo were injured when their patrol was ambushed in a "targeted and deliberate" attack on October 17, the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo said in a statement Friday.

The ambush took place near Buganza in North Kivu province, where another Indian peacekeeper was killed in a clash between the Congolese army and the rebel March 23 Movement in July.

"This premeditated attack is inadmissible," said MONUSCO head Roger Meece. "We will work with the national authorities to identify those responsible for this ignoble deed so that they are brought to justice."

North and South Kivu in eastern Congo are witnessing increased fighting between the army and the M23. The fighting has forced more than 300,000 people to flee to neighbouring countries.

MONUSCO has 19,000 uniformed men and women in Congo to bring stability and ensure free elections.

Soldier killed

New Delhi: An Indian soldier with the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo was killed while trying to retrieve a mechanised vehicle stuck in a river there. The incident took place a few days ago. The body of the soldier from Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan has been handed over to his relatives. The soldier was part of the mix troop of 1 Guards (mechanised infantry) and 7 Dogra Battalion.
