6 injured as PCR van runs over labourers

A Police Control Room van reportedly ran over six persons sleeping on Lodhi Road,early on Monday morning. The PCR van was patrolling the area.

A case of rash and negligent driving and causing hurt has been registered at the Lodhi Road police station.

Police said the men were “sleeping on the road and not the footpath”,when the PCR van ran over them around 2.30 am on Monday. There were three officials in the van.

The injured — Ram Nivas,Satyavaan,Jai Singh,Yograj,Arvind and Hari Singh — were rushed to AIIMS.

“The injured are labourers from Badayun in Uttar Pradesh and were sleeping in a CWG parking lot near Barapullah flyover when the incident occurred,” said a senior police officer.

He said the van was not being driven by its designated driver. “The in-charge of the PCR van,Morari Lal,was driving when the incident happened. Though Morari Lal has a driving licence it seems he was learning how to drive when the incident happened. The driver,constable Yogis Kumar,was in the car as well. Both personnel have been suspended,” the officer said.

“Morari Lal has been arrested. A departmental inquiry will be conducted and investigation is on,” said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat.
