  • Malaysia sedition
Muslim protesters arrive at a court in Shah Alam, outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Six Malaysian Muslims were charged on Wednesday with sedition and illegal assembly for indulging in an act that hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community during a controversial demonstration against the relocation of a century-old temple in a Muslim majority neighbourhood.

Besides six others were charged with illegal assembly under the Police Act.

Deputy Public Prosecutor asked for bail to be set at 15,000 ringgit each. But the Sessions Judge granted the bail at 4,000 ringgit each.

The case is up for mention again on October 21. The accused were later taken to a Magistrate's court where they and six others were charged with illegal assembly under the Police Act.

The 12 were part of a group of Muslims from the Shah Alam suburb in Selangor state that marched to the secretariat building to protest against the temple relocation on August 28 and indulged in an act hurting the sentiments of the minority Hindu community.
