With his trial stalled and after three years behind the bars, Abdul Wahiuddin, one of the 13 accused in the July 11, 2006 serial train blasts, now wants to know the exact stage at which the case is stuck. Wahiuddin has filed a right to information (RTI) application to know the status of his case along with details of other pending terror-related cases in the country.

Wahiuddin, who has been in jail since September 2006, has apparently lost hope. He moved his application before the registrar of the Supreme Court. “He moved the application just to find when the trial will finally begin and if there is any scope for expediting the trial,” said one of the lawyers who was representing him earlier.

The accused has also moved an application to visit New Delhi so that he can closely follow the developments. “He is willing to inspect the documents and ensure that all the desired information is provided,” the counsel said.

Wahiuddin was arrested by the ATS for allegedly harbouring Pakistani militants who carried out the attack on July 11, 2006. The trial was stayed in 2008 after some of the accused moved the apex court, challenging Section 2 (1)(e) of the MCOCA law, stating that the state of Maharashtra did not have the legislative competence to decide on any charge that deals with “promoting insurgency”.

The seven bombs detonated in the suburban trains had claimed 187 lives besides injuring several hundreds.
