Unidentified persons broke into J P Jewellers in Rasta Peth and decamped with about 7.5 kg gold ornaments worth around 2 crore and Rs 47,000 cash on Thursday night.
Shop owner Kiran Zaverchand Sonigra (35) of Rasta Peth lodged the complaint at the Samarth police station. Police said burglars entered the shop by breaking the rear door. They also took away digital video recorder (DVR) of the CCTV installed inside so that police could not get clues about them.
Police said Sonigras, who are into jewellery business for the last 40 years, are also into money lending. The J P Jewellers is located in an old building near Apollo Talkies in Rasta Peth. Kiran's father Zaverchand Sonigra, who also owns the shop, stays with his wife behind the jewellery shop. Kiran resides in a nearby residential society.
Police said Zaverchand locked the shop around 9.30 pm on Thursday and went to his son's residence with his wife for dinner. When they returned around 11.15 pm, they found the rear door of the shop broken and ornaments, including gold bangles, necklace, rings, all weighing about 7.5 kg, and Rs 47,000 cash missing.
They informed their son and police. Senior police officers, including Commissioner Gulabrao Pol, Deputy Commissioner (Zone II) Ramnath Pokle, Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Rajesh Bansode, Assistant Commissioners M M Makandar, Vinod Satav, senior inspector G V Nikam, inspector B B Ingale, visited the crime scene for investigation. Four special teams were despatched to different locations for nabbing the burglars.
In July this year, unidentified persons had robbed gold and cash amounting to Rs 61.4 lakh from P R Jewellers on Laxmi Road.
