AHMEDABAD, NOVEMBER 21: The Surat city Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Friday filed the first chargesheet in the Surat bombs case before the designated Metropolitan Court naming Tanveer Pathan and Zaheer Patel as the locals who provided logistics support to Indian Mujaheedin (IM) members and helped in planting bombs across the city.

According to the police, the 600-page chargesheet also clearly establishes that both Pathan and Patel were responsible for renting two houses in Surat used as a base by the bomb planters. The chargesheet names 70 persons, out of which 61 are absconding. The police have also named 224 persons as witnesses in the case.

According to DCB officials, the chargesheet traces the journey of the explosives used in Surat and establishes that the explosives were sent from Karnataka by Riaz Bhatkal, one of IM’s founder members, to its activists in Mumbai and Pune.

Nine IM members arrested by the Pune police and Mumbai ATS, and brought on a production warrant from Maharashtra, are currently in the custody of the Surat DCB.

As many as 26 unexploded bombs were found in various parts of Surat between July 28 and July 30. The Surat DCB filed the chargesheet in a case registered under Kapodara police station where an explosives laden car was found. The car, a red Hyundai Santro contained bomb-making materials like Ammonium Nitrate, ball bearings and shrapnel.

According to Surat DCB officials, investigations have shown enough evidence to link Pathan with Sajid Mansuri and Qyamuddin Kapadia, two key IM members accused in the Ahmedabad serial blasts case. Both the accused are said to have provided ground support and help to the bomb planters.
