700 traffic policemen deployed to manage roads
While the entire city celebrates the festival of lights, there are those who are trying their best to check that no roads are blocked while visiting family and friends in the city. As many as 700 traffic policemen, including a force of 100 from the Indian Reserved Force are on their toes to check the increased traffic in the city.
"We are trying our best to manage the traffic but the number of vehicles are so much that we are not able to keep the roads on a fast pace. All we can do is to try our best to have the traffic personnel help the residents avoid traffic jams even if they have to move at a very slow pace," said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kamal Deep.
The UT traffic police had made a request of 120 additional people and they have received a manpower of a hundred. The major areas where the traffic personnel are deputed in double shifts are the Sectors 15, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 33, 34 and 37.
"We have identified these areas as the ones with the most traffic rush due to the markets. Here we have deputed traffic policemen in double shifts to avoid any traffic nuisance and parking problems," said DSP Kamal Deep.
Also the grain market, Housing Board light point, old labor chowk, new labor chowk etc are also being lined with policemen keeping in view the location of these intersections. It is not only the rush of city residents, but their friends and family who are coming to exchange gifts from outside the city.
"It is still manageable if we have to take care of only the residents of Chandigarh, but we have so many people from Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh whose friends and family are living in Chandigarh. This adds a lot to the traffic as then the people from outside shop for themselves too," added the DSP.
