75% voting in panchayat elections

Polling for 1,161 village panchayats in 22 districts of the state passed off peacefully with around 75 per cent of the 19.87 lakh voters exercising their franchise on Sunday.

"As per the information received, an average 75 per cent voting has been registered for 1,161 village panchayats in 22 districts which went to polls today," said incharge state election commissioner P S Shah said.

Counting of votes is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

The elections were not fought on the symbols of political parties.

The state Election Commission had last month issued a notification for elections to 1,447 panchayats as their term was about to end in February. As candidates in 286 panchayats were declared elected unopposed, polling for 1,161 panchayats was held today.

"Polling was held in a peaceful manner and no untoward incident was registered," Shah said, adding, "A candidate from ward number 3 of Aniyari village in Okha, Jamnagar died today."

Meanwhile, polling for 76 municipalities will be held on Tuesday.
