  • The Centre on Saturday decided to provide consular access to 79 Pakistani prisoners to speed up their deportation process. The Union Home Ministry intimated the J-K Police to send the prisoners to Amritsar Central jail for consular access on October 13.

The prisoners include the housewife, Kapoor Jan, who had strayed across the Line of Control following her goats and was arrested more than four years ago in Uri sector. She was convicted and served six months simple detention, but was held at Uri police station because of the delay in her deportation. Jan will be one of the 26 prisoners sent to Amritsar in the first phase of the process.

The Indian Express reported Jan's plight when she was forced to live with schizophrenic patients in Srinagar's Psychiatric hospital.
