  • Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya on Friday alleged that 79 victims of the 26/11 terror attacks were yet to receive compensation from the Centre as the state government had failed to provide information about them to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The PMO had announced relief packages, ranging from Rs 1 lakh to 3 lakh, for the injured and the kin of those killed in the attack last year.

According to Somaiya, out of the 403 eligible victims, the PMO has issued cheques to 118 victims. While the state government has sent proposals of 324 victims, it is yet to forward proposals of remaining 79 victims, he said. “The state government has failed to provide information about these 79 victims to the Prime Minister’s Office, and, therefore, they have not received the compensation amount,” the former BJP MP said.

Somaiya, who has filed a petition with the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) against the state government on the issue, said he would approach the National Human Rights Commission next week over the non-payment of relief money to the victims even a year after the attacks. He also said that he would go on a hunger strike outside the Vidhan Bhavan during the three-day Assembly session to ensure that the victims get the compensation by November 26 this year.

Additional chief secretary M Rameshkumar, however, said that the 79 applications were pending due to lack of details of the victim’s bank account numbers while some cases were that of foreign nationals. He added that 80 per cent of the work had been completed and the SHRC had appreciated the work done by the government.
