8 arrested for Sunday violence

A Delhi Police constable was critically injured in the clashes, 26 vehicles were damaged

Eight persons were arrested on Monday and booked for attempt to murder and rioting after a 45-year-old Delhi Police constable was hit and trampled upon, leading to him suffering a cardiac arrest outside the Tilak Marg police station on Sunday. The constable is critical and admitted at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.

Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dharmendra Kumar said: "We have registered a case of rioting and attempt to murder at the Tilak Marg police station and arrested nine persons."

Protesters had turned violent on Sunday, breaking barricades and attacking police personnel at India Gate. Some blocked traffic on arterial roads and damaged buses — 12 DTC buses, 12 PCR vans and two government vehicles were damaged.

Police said protesters were carrying bottles filled with petrol and they used these to torch barricades. Police have recovered some such bottles from the spot.

Constable Subhash Tomar, who was on duty outside the Tilak Marg police station around 6.30 pm, was assaulted by the mob. He fell to the ground and, police said, the crowd trampled on him. Police said he had to be revived thrice and is on ventilator support.

Shankar Bisht, Nand Kumar, Chaman Kumar, Shantanu Kumar, Kailash Joshi, Amit Joshi, Abhishek and Nafees Ahmad were produced at the Patiala House Courts on Monday. They were granted bail as the investigating officer could not present evidence against them.

Sources said the Delhi Police scanning social networking sites to identify those who led the protests. Senior police officers said they are going through Facebook and Twitter to identify those who planned the protests. Police said they are keeping track of the mass messages being sent out.

The men were booked for obstructing public servant in discharge of duty, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty,disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant, rioting, armed with deadly weapon), unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object, attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty.
