Mumbai: A week after terrorists Ajmal Ameer Kasab and Abu Dera Ismael Khan wreaked havoc by firing indiscriminately inside Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station, a bag containing 8 kg explosives believed to be RDX was found inside the station during a check of unclaimed baggage.

“A lot of baggage and belongings of passengers that were left by them in the station were cleared and kept in a separate area. Over the week, much of it was claimed by people. Today, while sifting through the unclaimed baggage, the police found a bag containing RDX in two packets of 4 kg each. No timer was, however, recovered,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

The bag had been lying at the unclaimed baggage section of the Government Railway Police (GRP) station. It had a metal container, inside which there was a smaller container with black explosives and ball bearings inside.

Incidentally, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had made a visit to the CST station barely minutes after the explosives was recovered.

Additional Director General of Police (Railways) K P Raghuvanshi, who is holding additional charge of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), said the bomb was in one of the unclaimed bags lying at CST since last Wednesday. He confirmed that the Mumbai Police Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad had been called in.

Meanwhile, from Kasab’s interrogation, the police have been able to get some answers about the two explosions that had taken place inside taxis at Dockyard Road and Vile Parle. “Kasab told us that he and Khan had planted the bomb that exploded at Dockyard Road, while the one at Vile Parle was planted by the terrorists who were holed up in Nariman House. The bombs were planted below the driver’s seat and the motive was to create as much panic and devastation as possible,” informed Maria.

With the Mumbai Police finding that the terrorists had taken five taxis from Badhwar Park and that the explosions took place in two of them, investigations are on to account for the other three taxis. “Our investigations are on in this regard. We have contacted the taxi union for help on this,” said Maria.

According to the police, the two explosive devices recovered by the police from the front of Yacht Club and Café Leopold were set to explode four hours and 57 minutes from the time they were armed. “The idea of planting them around Taj Mahal hotel might have been to cause casualties when police surrounded the building,” said Maria.

National Security Card by Victor E. D'souza on 2008-12-04 14:37:14.614661+05:30
Security issue is of major concern now. Nobody knows whom they are dealing with or living next door with. The Government must make sure all Indian nationals must have an Identity Card with his/her photograph, Finger print and his address, occupation with all relevent details stored in a Sim card in the ID card. The card should be used and recorded for all Government services Hospital, Banks or any transaction over Rs. 500/= The Id number issued should be recognise the holder easily like starting with first 2 figure birth year second 2 figure birth month next 2 figures indicating proffession followed with birth state , district Muncipal or grama panchayath then a unique no. current address no. it is easy to identyfy the holder at by checking this numbers additional information stored in the SIm if required. These cards should be in person at all times with the holder on request it has to be provided or taken to custody(fined) till it is produced.
Is this true by Nanda on 2008-12-04 12:24:59.940108+05:30
Kasab is 20 as per all media reports, he is the third child and has 1 elder brother and 1 elder sister. His mother is 34. This means, she delivered him at 14, so she would have delivered the first two children at 10 and 12 on a best case estimate. Worst case, she delivered babies before she was 10 years of age.EIther this family is so bad, or this report is a nonsense.
Finding RDX by Shivaram Hegde on 2008-12-04 11:18:21.772467+05:30
I wonder how can it takes a week to find it, are the police ware sleeping? they should have checked and marked bagges as safe or unsafe. This type of casual attitude is causing the tragidy that are wittnessed, our life and properties are not safe in the hand of such a incompitent personns. There is no accountability, what is Mr. Maria is doing, he should terminate the service of the persons responsible for that delay. The article mentions Deshmuk visited the CST during that period, is his life is more valuable than millions of travelers who are usuing the stating for commuting?

I agree with Mr. Shivaram. It looks like this check was made only in the event of his visit to CST! Or else???And the CM? look at their cowardice they resigns at a time when he should be taking immediate action and be a proactive parliamentarian! But I believe our country has always seen people like him

now aren't these a bunch of jokers why couldn't they have checked all the baggage. which cop with the right head would leave some of the baggage abandoned on the railway station. This is the kind of carelessness that our country is suffering from. I think one of the persons who need to resign is the police commissioner of Bombay, just a bit surprised why are we not asking for his resignation after all he was also preview to the intelligence that was passed, and it was his responsibility to act on it

Richest state in India. Richest muncipality in India. Where is all 1000s of crores of tax money disappearing? Trace that first while we are at it. Because , not the possibility is that every rupee of such money must have been siphoned away. No one knows. Probe that first. We want answers.

If it was kept later, then? by debjani on 2008-12-03 20:23:24.336983+05:30
Let us not assume that this bag was dropped on that fateful day of 26th November. It is a chilling possibility that this bag of RDX was kept at a later stage. Authorities should now wake up and look for the five terrorists that went missing!
