In a bizarre incident,a bunch of eight spoon handles, each measuring 5 to 6 centimetres in length, were found in the stomach of a 27-year-old man here.

In an hour-long surgery conducted at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32),the bunch was finally removed.

The doctors who performed the surgery said the patient,a resident of Chandigarh, has a history of drug addiction and had developed a habit of consuming metallic objects for the last seven to eight months.

The same patient had to undergo an endoscopy six months ago and at that time, too, doctors removed six spoon handles from his stomach. The patient is a resident of Sector 27 and his father works with the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking.

The patient was referred to us by a private clinic four weeks ago. We admitted him and performed various scans. As the eight handles were in a bunch, they could not be removed through endoscopy. Thus, after a discussion among doctors,it was decided to perform a surgery, Dr Mayank Jayant, who performed the surgery, said.
