‘84 riot victims played vital role in victory’

The Danga Peerat Welfare Committee on Wednesday claimed the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots had played a major role in the the victory of the Badals in the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections. "Out of 4.5 lakh voters, nearly 90 per cent were from riot victim families," said Surjit Singh, Danga Peerat Welfare Committee chief.

Amarjeet Singh Rajpal, senior vice-president of the committee, added: "Sarna himself is responsible for this defeat. Our team had campaigned extensively and asked the voters for a change. Instead of being a religious body, DSGMC was being used more for political activities and the sangat was unhappy about this. Besides, the Sarna group had honoured Sajjan Kumar, Jadish Tytler, who were involved in 1984 riots. Even schools being run by DSGMC were not working properly because of ill management, the committee alleged.
