The Delhi High Court granted anticipatory bail to former Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar along with six others accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases on Friday. Justice Pathak has directed them to furnish a personal bond, along with a surety of Rs 50,000 each. The court noted there was no fresh ground to warrant his arrest. Twenty-five years have gone by and the delay (in the deposition of witnesses) undoubtedly tilts the balance in favour of the petitioners,at least for the purpose of granting bail to them, the judge said. The court refused to buy the CBIs argument that granting bail will hamper a fair trial. Kumar had evaded arrest for over a week after non-bailable warrants were issued against him.
