9.5 degrees C in Pune: Chill sets in

Residents of the city woke up to a chilly morning on Saturday with the minimum temperature taking a two-degree dip from Friday and recording 9.5 degrees Celsius — making it the lowest recorded for the season till now. It is also the third lowest temperature recorded in the month of November in the last 10 years.

"On Saturday, there was a deviation of almost of five degrees from the normal. This is not a regular phenomenon, considering that it is the third lowest recorded by the Met department for the month of November since 2002," said Director, Weather Central, Dr P C S Rao. According to statistics available, the lowest for the month of November has been 8.3 degrees Celsius recorded on November 22, 2005, and November 23, 2007, while it was 9.5 degrees Celsius on November 20, 2002.

Since 2002, November temperatures have dipped below 10 degrees only five times. While the lowest mark in 2005 was 8.3 degrees, 2007 did not see the mercury go below 9.9 degrees Celsius. November 27 in 2008 and November 20 in 2002 recorded the lowest temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius. In 2011, the lowest recorded for the month of November was 10.7 degrees (November 18). The lowest ever November temperature recorded in Pune has been 4.6 degrees Celsius (November 27, 1964).

The Met department has maintained that conditions are favourable for a further drop in the night temperatures across the central and the peninsular India for the next two days. Incidentally, the early part of the month had seen a rise after some low pressure formation and "active easterlies" while the dip in mercury has been attributed to the "active northerlies".

"The fall in temperature has come with clear skies, increased dryness and drop in relative humidity as well as the active northerly winds bringing in the cold conditions," said a Met official. The early part of November saw the temperatures hover around 16-18 degrees Celsius, which had been attributed to the cyclonic circulation that developed over Maharashtra enhancing the humidity and cloudiness and even leading to light showers in some parts of the state. "The circulation has reduced and thus increased the dryness in the atmosphere," added the Met official.
