For,916 cases have been registered against violators under the Punjab Land Preservation Act,1900,by the Forest Department in the last one year for encroaching on forest land.

This information has been supplied by the Punjab government in connection with the ongoing case pertaining to alleged illegal properties owned by various high-ups in the city periphery. The government has decided that the Financial Commissioner (Revenue) will decide pending cases pertaining to ownership of shamlat (common) land falling in the villages of Nada,Karoran and Paracch (city periphery).

At a meeting headed by the Punjab chief secretary last month, the government decided that the shamlat land needs to be restored without further delay.
