In the past four years,99 Mumbai Police staffers and 270 Central Railways (CR) employees have been fined for ticketless travel on trains as they were not carrying bonafide tickets or duty passes.
A Right To Information (RTI) request filed by activist Anil Galgali with the CR revealed that in the past four years, the Raiways penalised 11 Mumbai Police personnel and recovered Rs 4,261 as fine. The response to the RTI application also shows the Mumbai Police had also initiated departmental action against 88 personnel for ticketless travel, resulting in the recovery of Rs 30,999 as fine.
As many as 99 railway employees were penalised in the
past four years and Rs 35,275 was recovered in fines, while departmental action was initiated against 171 railway staffer, amounting to fines worth Rs 63,067.
The data is negligible compared to the actual quantum of local police personnel and railway staff travelling without tickets or duty passes on trains in all classes,Galgali said.
Many times,I asked the ticket checkers why they dont take action against these officers. They say they ignore such cases because they dont want matters to escalate, he added.
Railway Protection Force staff and other officers are permitted to travel without bonafide tickets only if they have an on-duty pass or a card pass, the reply to the RTI application said.
The GRP or the local police personnel, like anybody else, are not permitted to travel without proper authority or a ticket in any class on Indian Railways, the reply said.
