A distinguished panel of doctors will answer your health queriesin this column every week:

.

I am 59, recently detected with diabetes (sugar level PP 360). I was put on medicines and my sugar level has come down to 160 (PP) in a month. Ten years ago, a sadhu gave me some sleep inducer and it really works. My injuries heal with application of dettol or coconut oil. And my blood pressure is normal. Is the regular use of the potion responsible for my blood sugar and pressure?

— Purushottaman, Pune

Dr Anoop Misra, HoD, Diabetes and Metabolism, at Fortis Hospital, Delhi, says:

Any such potion may contain substances which may not only increase blood pressure and raise sugar levels but also damage vital organs like pancreas (reason for diabetes) or even liver and kidneys. The medicine needs to be analysed. Please tell your doctor about it. Besides, 30 to 40 per cent people in your age develop diabetes—with normal cholesterol and blood pressure. Continue with the medication. Go along the advice of your diabetologist.

I am a 32-yr-old woman, my hair and skin is very dry. Even regular oil massages don’t help. What should I do? — Aditi, Ghaziabad

Ishi Kosla, Clinical nutritionist, says:

It can be a lack of essential fatty acids or deficiency of vitamin E. So supplements like primrose oil and Omega 3 fats can be used. Take natural fats like nuts and seeds like almonds, peanuts and sunflower seeds. If this doesn’t help, go for a thyroid and heamogram profile and consult a doctor.
