After the rout in recent by elections in Uttar Pradesh which saw its influence in the Muslim community waning, the Samajwadi Party has launched an exercise to remove all "misconceptions" in the community due to the Kalyan Singh factor.
"The party MLAs and MPs are meeting the Muslim leadership as well as going among the masses in order to remove all misconceptions, if any, about the secular character of the party," said a senior party leader.
"We had always followed the secular agenda upholding the rights and interests of the Muslims for which, when in government, the SP had also given them due representation in the recruitment in the police and PAC," he said adding all the doubts which had been generated about the party by its detractors are being removed.
"As a matter of fact, the minorities know that SP is the only party which follows secular agenda in right earnest and its other political opponents including the BSP and Congress have failed the community in one way or the other," he said adding party's stand on the Librehan and Sri Krishan commission reports as well as the Batla encounter case is well known in the community.
On the criticism regarding the demand for rebuilding the Babri mosque raised from the party platform recently, he said leaders had reminded the Congress of its promise to build the mosque at the same place soon after the incident.
"The party leaders have asked for day to day hearing on the lines of Reliance gas dispute in order to finalise the case at the earliest," he added.
