Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday announced that a memorial to be named Jang-e-Azadi will be built to showcase the rich contribution of Punjabi freedom fighters and martyrs to the countrys struggle for freedom.
Speaking after inaugurating and dedicating \Wadda Ghallughara Ghallughara Martyrs Memorial to the people and Khalsa Panth,Badal announced that the Jang-e-Azadi will be set up in Doaba. We will spend Rs 300 to Rs 400 crore on the memorial, he said,adding that the nitty-gritty of the project will be finalised in next cabinet meeting.
Underlining the sacrifices made by Punjabis in the freedom struggle,Badal said that despite constituting a mere two and a half percent of the countrys population,Punjabis had made 80 per cent sacrifices in the freedom struggle. He added that the memorial will showcase how Punjabis fought against the British Rule.
Earlier,before the formal inauguration of the Wadda Ghallughara Martyrs Memorial,an Ardas ceremony was performed by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh to pay tribute to the 30,000 Sikhs who attained martyrdom in a battle with the army of over 1 lakh led by Mughal emperor Ahmed Shah Abdali in Kup Rohira on February 5,1762.
Saying that it was the will of God that he had managed to give shape to such memorials,the CM said that he will erect similar memorials for other communities as well,like a mosque in Malerkotla and a temple for Hindus.
In his address,Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal said that world class memorials were the outcome of the visionary approach of the chief minister.
