While every political leader of consequence was searching for allies and trying to strike deals on Friday ahead of counting of votes in the Lok Sabha elections,BSP president and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati preferred to stay at her residence in Lucknow far from the madding crew of TV cameras.
She was not available even to those considered privileged enough to have direct access to her. No one was sure what exactly she was doing and to who all she had spoken over the phone.
BSP sources said while she continued to keep a close watch on every political development in New Delhi, she was anxious about the counting of votes as several constituencies in UP had triangular or four-cornered contests. Another worry was the states such as Maharashtra,Haryana and Bihar where the party hoped to open its account.
Hoping that her party would emerge as tisari badi takat (third most powerful) after the Congress and BJP,she had dispatched two of her trusted men the BSPs Brahmin mascot Satish Chandra Mishra and the partys Muslim face Naseemuddin Siddiqui to New Delhi On Thursday.
While Siddiquis task is said to be to supervise the counting of votes in Delhi,Mishra is functioning as Mayas eye and ear in New Delhi. He is expected to return here later in the evening and brief her.
Mayawatis senior party leaders, who are in-charge of state units, would come to Delhi by Saturday evening.
Party insiders said Mayawati was not interested in aligning with the UPA or the NDA,as the Third Front suited her political interest better. But her exact stance would depend on the performance of her own party and the constituents of the Third Front.
